Government's Efforts for Management of Hazardous Solid Wastes
Abstract
This study is about the Assessment of Household Hazardous Waste Management in Nablus city and its refugee camps and aims studying household hazardous waste (HHW) to determine the type and the quantity of hazardous materials most commonly used at homes, the level of awareness of household heads concerning the environmental friendly disposal of these substances, the extent of hazardous substance-related accidents and injuries occurring at homes. It also suggests an integrated management plan for HHW, taking into consideration different engineering measures for managing the HHW from the point of generation to final disposal. The assessment was carried out using a questionnaire, which was distributed among 1,300 households. In addition, analysis of the household-generated solid waste was carried out at the Nablus solid waste transfer station. Over 15 working days, 150 samples were analyzed for HHW from 23 tons of municipal solid waste. It was found that Nablus city HHW (1,600 ton/day) contains 2.89% and its surrounded refugee camps and contain 1.88% of hazardous waste. These are in proportion to the generator’s income.
