Abstract

Managing food waste is a critical global challenge, and nanotechnology offers innovative solutions to minimize waste and enhance resource recovery. This chapter explores the role of nanotechnology in food waste management, focusing on nano-based enzymes and catalysts that accelerate waste conversion, biofuel production, and the extraction of valuable compounds/bioproducts from food waste. It further examines the potential of biodegradable and compostable packaging materials, particularly nano-enabled bioplastics, designed for efficient end-of-life management to enhance food security. Additionally, nanotechnology-driven sensors play a pivotal role in waste tracking and optimization by improving supply chain monitoring and enhancing waste management systems. These advancements facilitate better resource utilization, reduce environmental impact, and promote a circular economy. The integration of nanotechnology in food waste management not only ensures sustainability but also fosters innovation in waste reduction strategies. This chapter concludes by emphasizing the need to overcome limitations through interdisciplinary approaches to drive the implementation of nanotechnology in food waste mitigation efforts.
