Abstract

A low vision evaluation is an essential part of any patient who has Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) since all these patients have some form of compromised vision. A methodical examination should be performed to help identify the full extent of the visual acuity and visual field loss. The following step is to measure the scope and depth of the patient’s remaining vision and visual field. At this point the low vision specialist can apply the appropriate low vision devices, whether optical or non-optical or compensatory strategies to assist and maximize the patient’s functional vision. Patients with visual hallucinations, especially those with CBS, often present with homonymous hemianopia visual field defects if the vision loss originated from a central pathology. Prism devices can be incorporated to help expand the patient’s field of vision. These are addressed in detail in this chapter. Using an interdisciplinary approach and identifying community services is necessary in counseling and essential training in the use of these optical and non-optical devices if one expects to significantly improve the patient’s quality of life.
