Abstract

The Indian aquatic oligochaete fauna is known for its diversity. The order Tubificida has been studied for significant biodiversity. This order encompasses 28 genera and 89 species distributed across three families, Lumbriculidae, Enchytraeidae, and Naididae. These oligochaetes play a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems, contributing to nutrient recycling, sediment bioturbation, and water quality maintenance. India is known to harbor a unique assemblage of endemic aquatic oligochaetes, comprising 19 species under eight genera and distributed transversely in two families. These endemic species underscore the ecological and evolutionary significance of India’s freshwater habitats.
