Abstract

The introduction of exotic earthworm species in India has brought both benefits and challenges. Species like Eisenia fetida and Eudrilus eugeniae have enhanced soil fertility, supported vermicomposting, and promoted sustainable agriculture. However, exotic species such as Pontoscolex corethrurus disrupt native biodiversity, alter soil ecosystems, and outcompete indigenous earthworms. While exotic earthworms contribute significantly to organic farming and waste management, their ecological impacts necessitate careful management to balance agricultural benefits with the preservation of native ecosystems.
