Abstract

Smart cities have appeared as a resolution to handle the complicated issues that urban areas confront as a result of the rapid urbanization and growing demands for effective urban growth. The future of smart cities is significantly shaped by the grouping of Internet of Things (IoT) with edge computing. The rise of IoT devices and the increasing demand for efficient data processing in developed cities have propelled edge computing’s popularity. Through decentralized data processing at the network’s edge, edge computing lowers latency and improves real-time data processing capabilities by allocating computer resources in the vicinity of the data source. However, by connecting a vast range of devices and sensors, the IoT makes it possible to collect an enormous amount of data from urban situations. The combination of edge computing and IoT in smart cities offers a unique opportunity to use this data to enhance city services and make well-informed decisions. Real-time data produced by IoT devices, sensors, and cameras positioned across the city is processed using edge computing. Within the context of smart city development, this book chapter examines the synergies between IoT and edge computing technologies, highlighting their advantages and transformational potential. It discusses the fundamental concepts, challenges, and opportunities of integrating edge computing and IoT to improve urban settings’ sustainability, efficiency, and standard of living. It also discusses issues like infrastructure needs, data confidentiality and security, and other factors related to the incorporation of edge computing and IoT in smart cities.
