Abstract

This chapter asks whether football is truly a game of emergence, or whether mastery bends it toward progression. We build from “possibility space” to “probability space”, showing how rehearsal, feedback, and tactical learning narrow open options into likely lines of play. Using a cybernetic lens, we frame passes, runs, and interceptions as loops that recalibrate behavior in real time. Our parable, the “Game of Switches”, models how players move from time-1 chaos to time-2 competence, discovering dominant strategies and paths. Jesper Juul’s emergence/progression distinction is reinterpreted experientially: emergence as hot, lived uncertainty; progression as the cool sequence we reconstruct after the whistle. Football case studies reveal how apparent chaos is retrospectively patterned, and how positioning can increase the probability of the scoring event, known as P(A). Football’s allure, we argue, lies in this temporal duality and in the impossibility of a “God Mode” that would solve the game by erasing error and contingency.
