Abstract

This chapter introduces the foundational principles of polymer science, offering a comprehensive overview of the chemistry, structure, and properties of polymers. It explores both natural and synthetic polymers, emphasizing their molecular composition, formation processes, and classification based on source, structure, and thermal behavior. The chapter details the types of polymerization – addition and condensation – while highlighting the influence of molecular weight, crystallinity, and tacticity on polymer performance. It further examines the physical and mechanical characteristics of polymers that determine their applications across various industries, such as packaging, medicine, and construction. Special attention is given to the role of polymers in sustainable technologies and advanced materials design. Through theoretical explanations, recent developments, and practical applications, this chapter provides a solid framework for understanding how polymers are designed, synthesized, and utilized in modern science and engineering.
