Abstract

Polymers are essential materials across diverse industries, with their properties being directly influenced by synthesis routes and structural parameters. This chapter provides an in-depth overview of polymerization techniques, including step-growth and chain-growth mechanisms, copolymerization strategies, and advanced polymerization methods such as Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) and Reversible Addition-Fragmentation chain Transfer (RAFT). It also details key polymer characterization techniques – molecular weight determination, spectroscopy, thermal analysis, and rheological and mechanical testing. Finally, the chapter examines the behavior of polymers in solution and melt states, discussing the thermodynamics, viscosity, and rheology relevant to processing and application.
