Computational Methods and AI in Polymer Design
Abstract
Chapter 3 presents an in-depth overview of how computational methods and artificial intelligence (AI) are revolutionizing polymer design and development. Traditional experimental approaches, while essential, are often time-consuming and resource-intensive. Computational techniques such as molecular dynamics (MD), quantum chemistry, and density functional theory (DFT) provide valuable insights into polymer behavior at the atomic and molecular levels, enabling predictions of properties like chain conformations, mechanical strength, and thermal stability. The chapter further explores the growing role of AI and machine learning (ML) in polymer science, focusing on their ability to analyze large datasets, predict structure–property relationships, and generate novel polymer candidates. Techniques such as neural networks, support vector machines, and generative models are discussed in the context of polymer informatics and high-throughput virtual screening. Real-world case studies illustrate how AI has been successfully applied to design biodegradable polymers, stimuli-responsive materials, and advanced composites. By combining theoretical modeling with data-driven intelligence, researchers can accelerate the discovery of innovative materials with tailored properties. This chapter provides a foundational understanding of modern computational and AI tools, aiming to equip scientists and engineers with strategies to drive smart, efficient, and sustainable polymer design in the digital era.
