Applications and Future Trends
Abstract
This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the current and emerging applications of polymers across critical sectors, including biomedical devices, electronics, automotive and aerospace engineering, and sustainable materials development. Polymers have become central to modern innovation due to their adaptability, lightweight nature, and tunable physical and chemical properties. The chapter begins by exploring the role of biocompatible polymers in medical applications such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, and implantable devices, emphasizing material properties and regulatory considerations. It then examines the integration of conductive and semiconductive polymers in electronics and photonics, focusing on their use in flexible displays, sensors, and organic electronics. The discussion further extends to the automotive and aerospace industries, where high-performance polymers and composites contribute to weight reduction, fuel efficiency, and structural resilience. In addressing sustainability, the chapter highlights advanced recycling technologies, life cycle assessments, and the development of environmentally friendly polymers. Finally, it reflects on the future directions of polymer engineering within the context of global sustainability and technological advancement. Through these multidisciplinary insights, the chapter underscores the transformative role of polymers in shaping future industries and addressing societal challenges.
