AI for Web Application Security
Abstract
The rapid evolution of web application architectures—characterized by dynamic codebases, external Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), and Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines—has greatly expanded attack surfaces, making traditional vulnerability detection methods increasingly inadequate. Manual inspection and signature-based scanners struggle to keep up with emerging threats in modern development environments. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising paradigm to address these critical security challenges. Its integration into automated security testing frameworks enables autonomous vulnerability discovery and strengthens threat detection in complex, large-scale web systems. This chapter presents a comprehensive study of AI-driven security testing methodologies, including machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, and large language models (LLMs), specifically focusing on their application in static and dynamic analysis workflows. A novel hybrid evaluation framework is proposed, combining Snyk&s;s AI-enhanced Static Application Security Testing (SAST) with Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) Zed Attack Proxy (ZAP) extended through Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT)-powered intelligent fuzzing. Experimental validation is performed using the Damn Vulnerable Web Application (DVWA) to evaluate the effectiveness of various AI-based approaches. The results demonstrate that static analysis offers early detection and broad code coverage, while AI-augmented dynamic fuzzing provides richer runtime insights and superior creativity in test case generation. Notably, LLM-based input generation proved effective in uncovering logic-based vulnerabilities often missed by conventional fuzzers, resulting in a 117% improvement in detecting complex issues compared to traditional approaches. The chapter offers practical insights into comparative tool performance, automation capabilities, and seamless CI/CD integration of AI-enabled security testing. Key findings underscore the value of hybrid approaches that combine symbolic reasoning with generative AI to enhance vulnerability discovery in high-velocity development environments. Additionally, this chapter outlines actionable recommendations for integrating AI into security testing pipelines, along with a critical discussion of implementation challenges, including model explainability, reduction of false positives, and deployment security. The study concludes with forward-looking insights into emerging research directions, particularly adaptive test orchestration and the fine-tuning of AI agents in real-world production scenarios.
