Abstract

This chapter is intended as a primer for educators that are interested in using role-playing games in their classroom but lack experience with the ways that tabletop role-playing game mechanics can be modified. It offers a general review of the precedent for the role of imaginative play in the classroom so that educators understand what aspects of play are known to have positive impacts on learning. By connecting that context to the specific mechanics of three popular rule systems, it provides a framework for educators to begin exploring adaptations of games that will effectively serve their pedagogical needs.
