Abstract

This chapter outlines an inclusion-first framework for integrating Generative AI (GenAI) and metaverse/VR/XR technologies into distance STEM education. Grounded in equity, universal design, and authentic experience, it envisions online learning as both accessible and rigorous for learners with mobility, health, sensory, or connectivity challenges. The layered system integrates AI tutors, multimodal GenAI, VR labs, digital twins, and teleoperation for adaptive, immersive learning. An accessibility-focused interface offers customizable inputs, speech, gesture, and adaptive UIs. Instruction maps virtual labs to fundamental competencies, emphasizing project-based learning and performance assessment with integrity safeguards. The Sri Lanka Technology Campus (SLTC) Mechatronics Laboratory (MechaLab) case demonstrates success, characterized by high usability and significant learning gains. Overall, the chapter argues that GenAI–metaverse ecosystems can transform distance STEM learning into equitable, transparent, and empowering environments.
