Exploring Small Heterocyclic Compounds as Promising Agents in Cancer Therapy
Abstract
Heterocyclic compounds, owing to their inherent adaptability and unique physicochemical properties, represent fundamental scaffolds in medicinal chemistry. A significant proportion of approved therapeutic agents contain heterocyclic fragments, underscoring their central role in modern drug design. Beyond the drugs currently available in clinical practice, numerous heterocyclic compounds are under investigation for their potential efficacy in treating various cancers. Their versatile and dynamic core structures have been particularly advantageous in the development of novel anticancer agents. However, like all promising therapeutic candidates, heterocyclic compounds are not without limitations, which must be carefully considered in translational research. Notably, many existing anticancer drugs are derived from natural products, each characterized by distinct structural features and diverse mechanisms of action. These natural scaffolds interact with multiple therapeutic targets, offering valuable opportunities to address the complexity of cancer and related diseases.
