Abstract

This chapter will discuss international standards. It is often said that a standard has a longer lifespan than a specific technology. For example, the International Telecommunication Union states that ‘Whenever you are making a telephone call wherever in world, you are using an ITU standard’. While a complete and exhaustive listing of standards related to AI/ML and user interface design could be a book in its own right, in this chapter we will cherry-pick a few examples of standards that were mentioned or discussed in previous chapters. We will not be confined to international standards; we will also briefly discuss military standards on interface design, as those are often more detailed than corresponding international standards. The standard development process itself is often time-consuming and laborious but also rewarding in terms of understanding diversity in culture, convention and linguistics across nations. It is hoped that at the end of this chapter, readers will get an idea of the importance of standards, an overview of standard development organizations, and their applications in intelligent interface and interaction design.
