Abstract

The Solanaceous family, encompassing crops such as tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplants, plays a pivotal role in global food security. This chapter explores the nutritional, economic, and agronomic significance of these crops in diverse agro-ecological settings. By examining contemporary breeding techniques, including biotechnological advancements and traditional methods, we highlight the potential of Solanaceous crops to enhance food availability and security in the face of climate change and increasing population pressures. Moreover, the chapter addresses the challenges these crops face, such as susceptibility to pests and diseases, and the need for sustainable agricultural practices. Through this chapter we propose strategies for optimizing the production and utilization of Solanaceous crops, thus contributing to the broader discourse on sustainable food systems and food sovereignty.
