Abstract

The chapter introduces various numerical examples concerning the static and the dynamic response of laminated structures of different curvatures and lamination schemes. More specifically, extensive analyses are performed to determine the mode frequencies and shapes of many doubly-curved shells. Once the convergence of the solution is studied, for each case a systematic comparison against 3D FEM simulations is conducted, showing the accuracy and the computational efficiency of the model. For the static analysis, an efficient recovery procedure is introduced to reconstruct the 3D primary and secondary variables from the higher-order two-dimensional solution. The static response of structures with various curvatures is investigated, pointing out the effects of the adoption of a recovery procedure in higher-order simulations. Then, multifield numerical analyses are performed, in which different multifield coupling effects are studied. The results demonstrate that the model successfully match results from coupled 3D FEM models. Furthermore, new coupling effects are explored, and their influence on the global response of the structure is investigated.
