Abstract

Why is there a need for the history of a scientific topic? This is a question that has aroused serious interest recently ( Chang 2017 ). Such history is concerned with two aspects of science: one is the relationship between science and the society in which it is active. That lies outside the remit of this chapter. The other concerns how scientific knowledge is acquired and comes to be accepted as orthodox. It is the examination of these processes which is of interest and which forms the framework of this chapter. The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there ( Hartley 1953 ).
