Abstract

Modern transportation management emerges as a challenging task due to the growing urbanization concerns. This complexity has propelled the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies to enhance operational efficiency, ensure safety and promote sustainability. This chapter provides an overview of the use of artificial intelligence algorithms in transportation. Through a literature review, this study categorizes the application areas of algorithms, sheds light on implementation challenges and highlights directions for future research. Findings indicate that these algorithms are mainly employed in traffic prediction, autonomous driving, demand forecasting and predictive maintenance. Hybrid models are gaining more interest due to their ability to outperform single methods. However, the implementation faces some technical and operational challenges. The findings provide valuable insights for engineers, infrastructure planners and academics to promote the use of intelligent transport systems. Future research can conduct in-depth investigations through empirical studies.
