Traffic flow prediction and optimization
Abstract
These are contemporary cities that find traffic congestion to be one of their most important features. It has proved very important in the following three aspects: alleviating congestion, improving road safety, and enhancing transportation efficiency. The work explores methodologies and technologies employed in real-time traffic prediction and optimization. It starts with fundamental aspects of traffic flow parameters, traffic states, and data collection methods regarding them, and subsequently, continues to prediction models with the mathematical estimation models including Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and Kalman Filters up to the most sophisticated machine learning methods such as Random Forests, Support Vector Machines (SVM), and deep learning models such as Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and convolutional neural network (CNN). Optimization strategies refer to managing traffic signals and routes and controlling congestion. They are highlighted in this write-up with respect to their contribution to improving the flow of traffic and reducing delays. These have made considerable recommendations toward real-time processing of data using Internet of Things (IoT) devices and cloud computing, found in adapted traffic management systems that could change dynamically with regard to sudden changes in traffic conditions. Such had been made clear with regard to smart cities and intelligent transport systems beyond discussion through case studies. Scalability, real-time, privacy, and ethics challenges in AI for traffic management were also covered. Future development should include autonomous vehicles and reinforcement learning as promising evolutionary advances to automating traffic systems fully. The work ranges from up-to-date traffic flow prediction and optimization to forecasting trends and initiatives toward better urban mobility.
