A Common Goal
Abstract
This chapter serves as an introduction to Part III of this study that is concerned with the developments in computer graphics at the University of Utah. With reference to insights from the previous parts, this chapter outlines briefly what goals have driven the development of computer graphics at this institution. A particularly prominent goal was to create images that are believable, while this attribute was generally attached to a representational mode of depiction – even if a completely abstract phenomenon was to be illustrated, such as an atom etc. While earlier approaches have merely voiced these intentions, it can be said that in Utah they were first successfully realized. The third part demonstrates how this came about, and this chapter gives an overview of the chapters this part comprises.
