Laser Modification and Al–Ti Coating Effects on AZ31 Wear
Abstract
This chapter presents an approach to enhance the wear resistance of AZ31 magnesium alloy, which, despite its low weight, high specific strength, and excellent biocompatibility, suffers from poor wear and corrosion resistance. To address this limitation, laser surface modification using a nanosecond fiber laser was employed, followed by the application of Alumina–Titania (Al 2 O 3 –40 wt.% TiO 2 ) composite ceramic coatings via plasma spraying. The coated specimens were tested for wear performance under varying loading conditions and sliding speeds. The findings revealed that laser-treated samples exhibited significantly improved surface hardness and a reduced coefficient of friction (COF) compared to their uncoated counterparts, demonstrating the effectiveness of the combined treatment in improving surface durability.
