Digital Twins in the Era of IoT and AI
Abstract
Digital Twins are revolutionizing how we experience and operate the physical world. Through a virtual copy of a system, process, or object in the real world, digital twins enable us to see, track, and even forecast the actions of physical assets in real time. This chapter opens with a basic yet comprehensive overview of digital twins—how they were developed, what they do, and why they are important today. It then takes us through their architecture and lifecycle, describing how information flows from the physical to the virtual world and how insights from the digital twin are used to enhance performance and efficiency. We also delve into the various forms of digital twins, ranging from small components to large systems, and how they are applied in various industries—from manufacturing to healthcare and beyond. A significant portion of the discussion revolves around how technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are evolving digital twins to be more intelligent and beneficial. With IoT providing real-time information and AI interpreting it, digital twins turn into robust prediction, automation, and innovation tools. Naturally, this path is not without obstacles. Challenges such as data privacy, integration complexity, and expense still remain to be overcome. But as technology advances, so does the potential of digital twins. The chapter concludes by examining where digital twins are heading and how they can create smarter, more connected futures.
