Abstract

This chapter provides a comprehensive framework for the responsible development and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) within the financial services industry. The author summarises the most popular use cases for AI/ML across institutions, from traditional ML applications for fraud detection and credit scoring to emerging Generative AI (GenAI) capabilities for document processing and customer service automation. Key risks associated with AI/ML implementation are also reviewed, and suggested mitigants discussed. The chapter closes with a discussion of the four critical enablers for Responsible AI in financial services: a clear AI operating model, risk-proportionate governance frameworks, a robust and scalable IT infrastructure, and an appropriately skilled talent base. The key takeaway is that leveraging established controls, an agile staff deployment model, and a flexible tech stack will allow financial institutions to harness the enormous financial and non-financial benefits expected to be unlocked by the responsible use of AI.
