MXene Technology for Rehabilitation Medicine
Abstract
MXene-based materials have innovative potential in the field of rehabilitation medicine to bridge the gap between advanced material science using nanotechnology and clinical treatments. Due to their unique combination of high electrical conductivity, hydrophilicity, adjustable surface chemistry, mechanical flexibility, and excellent biocompatibility, MXenes are being used in various platforms to develop multifunctional rehabilitation devices. In this chapter, smart wound dressing by accelerating tissue regeneration, microneedle arrays for painless drug delivery and biosignal detection, conductive hydrogels that support cell proliferation and tissue recovery, and wearable biointerfaces capable of real-time neuromuscular monitoring and electrical stimulation have been described. In addition, the incorporation of MXene materials into medical rehabilitation technology can expand the range of patients’ responsiveness and applicability by minimally invasive intervention. In particular, photothermal properties, redox control ability, synergies with other functional biomaterials, and compatibility with them are believed to further improve the therapeutic efficacy. However, these challenges require an in-depth investigation into long-term safety, biodegradability after use, standardization of manufacturing processes, and regulatory approval. Future studies of medical applications in biomedical materials should prioritize interdisciplinary research, optimization of MXene formulations, and scalable production methods to realize full clinical potential.
