Abstract

This chapter explores various Indian Government initiatives and policies that support rice fortification as a long-term solution to address micronutrient deficiencies, especially in communities that are more susceptible. The prevalence of iron, folic acid, and vitamin B 12 shortages is highlighted, along with the need for rice fortification in the larger framework of food security and public health. It highlights the roles of various Government Departments, such as the Food Corporation of India Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, and Bureau of Indian Standards under Ministry of Consumer Affairs, in formulating Standards, ensuring quality control, and facilitating supply chain integration. This chapter also evaluates pilot initiatives, funding mechanisms, and scale-up strategies under centrally sponsored schemes like POSHAN Abhiyaan and Anemia Mukt Bharat. Through case studies and policy analysis, it evaluates the success, difficulties, and potential paths of rice fortification programs in improving nutritional outcomes. This chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for continuation of scale fortification programs in accordance with national nutrition targets, investment in awareness efforts to boost public acceptance, and modification of policies to solve operational issues to achieve national nutrition goals through fortified staple foods.
