Abstract

This chapter introduces the reader to the world of mathematical modelling of critical network infrastructures. It begins with a discussion of basic modelling principles and model categories. This clarifies the purpose of the models introduced in subsequent sections. The primary goal of this book is to familiarise and convince the broadest possible audience to apply the methods proposed here. Therefore, the chapter focuses on graph theory and game theory models. The former was used to create a specific language for describing the reliability of all network structures using concepts derived from graph theory. This resulted in a topological description of the reliability of critical network infrastructures – an easy-to-use approach. The fundamentals of game theory, in turn, provide decision models and methods for analysing critical network infrastructures, developed in Chapter 3 . The chapter concludes with three case studies. Two refer to oil pipeline networks in the United States and Saudi Arabia. The third concerns a model of an intersection in the city of Gdynia, in northern Poland.
