Abstract

This chapter addresses the topic of optimising critical network infrastructures. After introducing basic concepts such as single-objective and multi-objective optimisation and Pareto optimality, it moves on to propose a new approach to optimising critical network infrastructures. The main goal of this chapter is to expand the range of available methods. For discrete multi-objective optimisation, a binary knapsack problem is proposed. This eliminates the need for bi-level programming. Furthermore, the new families of weighted graphs with continuous weighting functions defined in Chapter 2 open up the possibility of using linear and nonlinear multi-objective optimisation methods, as well as single-objective optimisation methods. Finally, the chapter presents examples of the application of these methods in academic settings.
