Abstract

Omics technologies, including genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, are transforming botanical research, especially in medicinal and agricultural plant sciences. These powerful tools provide high-throughput, systems-level insights into plant biology, helping us understand the intricate molecular mechanisms that drive plant development, stress responses, and the creation of secondary metabolites. Genomics allows scientists to sequence and functionally annotate genomes, leading to the discovery of genes crucial for selecting desirable traits and improving crops. Proteomics builds on this by characterizing protein expression, structure, and interactions, pinpointing key enzymes and regulatory proteins in metabolic pathways. Metabolomics offers a complete picture of plant metabolites, aiding in classifying plants by their chemical profiles (chemotaxonomy), ensuring quality control, and identifying valuable bioactive compounds for new pharmaceutical developments. This chapter also delves into how multi-omics data can be integrated, addressing current methodological challenges and future directions. These advancements include single-cell omics, spatial transcriptomics, and artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted data interpretation. Collectively, these omics technologies are reshaping plant research, opening up exciting possibilities in drug discovery, precision agriculture, conservation efforts, and sustainable biotechnology.
