Abstract

This chapter focuses on novel formulation strategies to overcome critical barriers—such as inadequate solubility, limited bioavailability, and chemical instability—that hinder the pharmaceutical and cosmetic utilization of botanical extracts. Conventional herbal preparations encounter constraints stemming from fluctuating phytochemical profiles, oxidative/hydrolytic degradation, and non-uniform standardization caused by genetic diversity, environmental influences, and processing variability. We explore advanced nanoscale delivery systems, such as vesicular carriers (liposomes, phytosomes, niosomes, ethosomes, transfersomes), lipid-based nanoparticles (solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs), nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs)), nanoemulsions, and transdermal technologies, which improve targeted biodistribution, physicochemical stability, and controlled liberation of bioactive phytomolecules. Emphasis is placed on eco-conscious extraction methods, including supercritical CO 2 techniques, to reduce solvent consumption and ecological footprint. Key hurdles are critically assessed, such as standardization challenges (linked to variability in cultivation methods), instability under exposure to environmental factors (light, humidity, thermal stress), and regulatory uncertainties (limited clinical evidence and herb–drug interaction studies). Vesicular systems, particularly phytosomes—phospholipid-based complexes with polar phytochemicals—exhibit superior bioavailability and shelf-life stability. Illustrative examples include phytosomal formulations of supercritical CO 2 -derived Serenoa repens extract and Vaccinium myrtillus fruit extract. Transdermal delivery platforms, such as polymeric films infused with Boswellia serrata and curcumin, draw upon Ayurvedic principles to achieve prolonged therapeutic release. Emerging innovations highlight adaptive nanocarriers responsive to pH or temperature shifts and sustainable synthesis approaches (e.g., recyclable polymer nanoparticles). Synergizing nanotechnology with plant-derived therapeutics bridges gaps in clinical scalability and therapeutic efficacy. The discussion addresses obstacles in commercial feasibility, safety profiling, and precision targeting. Advocating for multidisciplinary collaboration among scientists, manufacturers, and policymakers, the chapter underscores the urgency of developing sustainable, patient-focused formulations. By integrating cutting-edge delivery technologies with environmentally responsible practices, this work advances global initiatives to unlock the untapped potential of botanical extracts in modern therapeutics.
