Abstract

This chapter presents a detailed study of the viscous Burgers&s; equation, a fundamental nonlinear model used to understand convection–diffusion phenomena in fluid dynamics. The equation balances nonlinear convection with viscous diffusion and captures important features like wave steepening, shock formation, and energy dissipation. The chapter begins by comparing Burgers&s; equation with the linear advection–diffusion equation, highlighting the role of nonlinearity. Both analytical and numerical methods are explored, including explicit and implicit finite difference schemes on uniform and non-uniform grids. Solutions are examined using energy spectrum analysis, revealing how energy cascades to smaller scales and is dissipated. Aliasing effects and modal decay are also analyzed, showing how high-frequency numerical errors arise and how higher-order schemes help suppress them. Grid design, especially in shock regions, is shown to strongly influence solution accuracy.
