Abstract

The chapter introduces the use of stiffness analysis, stability regions, and it provides guidelines for selecting appropriate time-stepping strategies based on problem characteristics. This chapter presents time integration techniques for ordinary differential equations (ODEs), with emphasis on explicit and implicit Euler methods and the Runge-Kutta family. The discussion begins with initial value problems, detailing the derivation, accuracy, and stability characteristics of the Forward Euler and Backward Euler methods, which are suited to non-stiff and stiff systems, respectively. Explicit Runge-Kutta schemes, including RK2, RK3, and RK4, are then introduced, highlighting their trade-off between computational efficiency and solution accuracy. Implicit Runge-Kutta methods are addressed in the context of stiff systems, where their enhanced stability properties justify the added computational complexity.
