Boundary Value Problems
Abstract
Boundary Value Problems (BVPs) require solving differential equations subject to conditions at multiple points in the domain, unlike Initial Value Problems (IVPs). They arise in steady-state settings across engineering and physics, especially fluid dynamics and heat transfer. This chapter presents the shooting method, which converts a BVP into an IVP by guessing a missing initial slope, integrating via Runge–Kutta, and adjusting the guess until boundary conditions at both ends are met. The nonlinear Blasius equation for laminar boundary layers over a flat plate serves as the key example: transforming its third-order ODE into a system of first-order equations and applying the shooting method to satisfy near- and far-field conditions.
