Abstract

Model-based systems architecting (MBSA) is a collaborative design activity in which highly codified diagrams mediate a multidisciplinary core team. Often too esoteric for the audience, these diagrams hinder understanding of the collection of symbols, connections, and meanings, hampering MBSA adoption. This chapter discusses the necessity of flexible, human-centered interaction with rich three-dimensional (3D) visuals that enhance users’ mental ability to grasp abstract system architecture concepts. An MBSA Metaverse prototype demonstrates the potential of virtual reality (VR) in a model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approach. In conclusion, this chapter discusses the challenges associated with designing human-centered systems and modeling interfaces and understanding their impact on the systems architecture process, covering various aspects such as cognition, psychology, perception, and user experience.
