Abstract

Sociotechnical systems, just like others, are composed of teams. Highly efficient teams are driven by various motivations and work as part of a system within specific environments, like human systems integration (HSI). This chapter will dive into teams’ development, motivation, performance, and how they become agile, self-organized teams. The chapter will also cover organizational change, obstacles presented within the change process, and recommendations to overcome resistance. The interactions of humans within the system of systems are key to enabling efficient HSI. For this to occur, organizations must be open and comfortable with uncertainty. The chapter will provide examples of how that can be done from several case studies of Agile teams at National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
