Abstract

Water leakage in pipelines causes major water loss and infrastructural damage globally. We introduce a prototype that uses IoT to solve this issue. It makes use of two YF-S201 water flow sensors with Arduino UNO Wi-Fi to detect leaks. It compares the inlet and outlet sensor readings. If the difference in their readings exceeds a certain threshold, a leak is detected and the buzzer and LED connected to the bread board are set off. A graphical user interface connected to the system allows the user to monitor water flow readings at all times. The system was allowed to run for 72 hours on a 9V battery. The recorded accuracy was 92% with less than 8% false positives. This solution is cost-effective, easy to set up and scalable across water networks. It works well for rural areas and building pipelines. Future enhancements could include using machine learning to predict leaks before hand, seeing the previous trends in flow rates. For regions like India where non revenue water losses exceeds 50%, this prototype could be very useful.
