Leveraging AI for intelligent decision-making in space mission planning
Abstract
Space mission planning is a complicated decision-making process with limited resources, risk, and incompatible priorities. An artificial intelligence application could increase the workability and trustworthiness of the planning process. Through testing the machine learned applications on noticeable previously collected mission information, of the 3 global space agencies, we studied whether or not there were trends to minimise the planning time, while satisfying safety standards. Our experiments prove that planning processes that are optimised by AI are given an additional benefit of 37% in scenario investigation, with a 22% increment in contingency recognition compared to conventional methods. Besides that, the incorporation of natural language processing to read mission documentation was implemented in an effort to enhance knowledge transfer between mission cycles by 41 per cent.
