Generative AI in Healthcare: Transforming Delivery and Redefining Patient–Provider Dynamics
Abstract
Generative AI has become a game-changing technology in medicine with substantial advances in diagnostic accuracy, personalized medicine, drug discovery, and clinical workflow. Generative AI can analyze complex medical data more accurately and faster through the intervention of models such as Transformers, Generative Adversarial Networks, and Diffusion Models. In diagnosis, AI-enabled medical images enjoy help from systems that can detect anomalies in X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans more precisely than conventional systems, offering early intervention and avoidance of misdiagnosis risks. In personalized medicine, treatment tailored by Generative AI from patients’ genetic history and past medical history has increased treatment efficiency and lower risks of side effects. In drug discovery, efficient development of new drugs by AI enables forecast of molecule interactions and generation of new molecules much more low-cost and time-saving than conventional methods. Despite this, Generative AI applications are riddled by serious ethical, legal, and societal concerns. Ethically, there are apprehensions of model bias as well as transparency of recommendations by AI. Legally, there are data protection, security, and data compliance requirements vis-à-vis Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to ensure protection to patient data confidentiality as well as security. Societally, there is enhanced vulnerability of aggravating healthcare disparities if unrepresentative databases are used in training AI systems. Minimizing these concerns responsibly is the need to ensure highest benefits of Generative AI at lowest risks. The article highlights applications of Generative AI in medicine as well as its ethical, legal, and societal concerns, an outlook to debate creating today’s medicine revolutionary responsibly.
