Inertial Confinement
Abstract
Inertial confinement fusion (ICF) is a method of generating energy by using high-powered lasers to compress and heat a small target containing a fuel, typically a mixture of deuterium and tritium. The fuel is compressed and heated so rapidly that it undergoes a nuclear fusion reaction, releasing a tremendous amount of energy. ICF has the potential to provide a virtually unlimited source of clean energy, with no greenhouse gas emissions or radioactive waste. However, it is still in the research and development stage, and there are many technical challenges that must be overcome before it can become a practical source of energy.
