Abstract

Because of the urgent need to address climate change, make better use of resources, and strengthen ecosystems, environmental sustainability is now seen as a top priority across the globe. This book chapter discusses how the combination of the Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning (ML), and renewable energy technologies can provide a clear plan for dealing with urgent environmental problems. It describes how technologies are used in wastewater treatment, air monitoring, smart agriculture, and clean energy projects to develop infrastructures that are sustainable, use data, and can be adjusted. 15 detailed chapters in the book show readers how IoT can be used for real-time checking of the environment, ML is applied to help forecast the future and boost systems and renewable energies to lower the environment’s carbon content. Examples of case studies are IoT-based wastewater systems, air quality sensor systems, solar irradiation models using AI, and systems that estimate farm yields. Such examples show that data intelligence helps make good decisions, saves energy, and aids in preserving the environment. The book highlights the importance of Morocco’s energy transition which sets an example for large-scale moves to renewables. Even so, introducing these technologies is not free from problems. It highlights some challenges that exist such as challenges in getting systems to communicate, making data easier to understand, energy needed by digital tools, high infrastructure costs, and worries about data privacy and AI clarity. The recommendations, therefore, include focusing on edge computing, creating sustainable IoT gadgets, using explainable AI, employing blockchain, and setting up community-centered smart grids. This chapter acts as a source of guidance for all those wanting to use new technologies for positive action on the environment. It aims at a healthy, safe, and green future by connecting new technologies with the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
