Abstract

In many parts of the world, the rapid pace of urbanization, industrialization, and vehicle expansion has resulted in a sharp decline in air quality, posing serious risks to environmental sustainability and public health. Despite their accuracy, traditional air quality monitoring systems often have the following issues: poor spatial coverage, high costs, and delayed data reporting. Utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for air quality monitoring has emerged as a revolutionary solution to these limitations. Using a network of low-cost sensors, wireless communication modules, cloud computing, and data analytics, this book chapter explores the development functionality and potential of IoT-enabled air quality monitoring systems that provide real-time environmental surveillance. Including sensor node design, data transmission protocols (such as MQTT, LoRaWAN, and Zigbee), cloud platforms for data aggregation, and AI/ML algorithms for forecasting and data interpretation, the chapter explains the architecture of modern IoT-based systems. By presenting successful deployments in urban, industrial, and rural settings, case studies demonstrate scalability, cost-effectiveness, and user accessibility through mobile and web interfaces. The chapter discusses possible remedies and future lines of inquiry in addition to the challenges associated with sensor calibration, data security, interoperability, and regulatory compliance. Implementing IoT into air quality monitoring is a significant step forward in the field of intelligent and sustainable environmental management. Public health initiatives, proactive pollution control decision-making, and increased citizen participation are all facilitated by the use of open-access data platforms. This chapter provides a comprehensive and forward-looking analysis of this rapidly evolving field, laying the foundation for upcoming developments in air quality management and environmental monitoring. IoT-powered air quality monitoring systems are expected to be crucial to environmental policy and urban planning projects as cities move toward smart infrastructure.
