“Technology”
Abstract
This chapter defines technology as the activity of building machines and procedures to harness natural phenomena and optimize functions. In contrast to science’s goal of description and prediction, technology’s value is determined by factors including its function, scalability, context of use, and, crucially, the narrative surrounding its adoption. The text explores the complex, symbiotic relationship between science and technology, where each enables the other. It concludes that while science seeks to know the world, technology aims to remake it, reflecting human values and carrying immense societal responsibility.
