Making Science
Abstract
This chapter critiques the modern practice of science, focusing on the core challenges of publishing and funding. It deconstructs the scientific article and the peer-review process, arguing they foster a “publish or perish” culture that can stifle innovation and reward sensationalism over reliability. Similarly, it scrutinizes research funding systems for encouraging low-risk work—the “streetlight effect”—and contributing to a replication crisis. This chapter advocates for systemic renewal, proposing alternatives like dynamic “open-ended” articles and new funding models that prioritize long-term trust and groundbreaking ideas to ensure a more efficient and just scientific enterprise.
