Applications of artificial intelligence in additive manufacturing: Comparative case studies on GE Aviation, Siemens Energy and BMW Group
Abstract
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Additive Manufacturing (AM) has made a revolution in industrial production by enhancing design precision, process optimization, quality assurance and savings. This manuscript investigates the practical applications of AI in AM through comparative case studies of three industry leaders: BMW Group, Siemens Energy and GE Aviation. Each case highlights distinct strategies and innovations, such as BMW Group&s;s adoption of intelligent design automation for mass customization, Siemens Energy&s;s deployment of AI for thermal process control, and GE Aviation&s;s use of machine learning for defect prediction. By analyzing these approaches, the study provides insights into how AI has been contributing to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and accelerate innovation cycles in AM. The findings underscore the transformative potential of AI-driven technologies in shaping the future of advanced manufacturing across diverse research and manufacturing sectors.
