Abstract

The usage of computers has grown dramatically over the last several years in the current environment of rapidly advancing technology, digitization, and growth. This trend is expected to continue in the next years at a very strong rate. The operating temperature of the junction plays a vital role in the functionality, longevity, and operation of the electric components of a CPU. The primary function of pin fins, which are expanded surfaces, is to increase the rate of heat dissipation by convection to cool computer chips. In this research, thermal analysis of rectangular fins is carried out to identify suitable fin geometry with adequate spacing to cool the computer chips efficiently. The software that has been used in the present research paper to carry out the design, modelling and simulation is Autodesk Fusion 360. Rectangular fin geometry parallel plate has been considered. The differing parameters in this case are the fin shape, fin thickness (2.5 mm, 3 mm, and 4 mm), fin height and fin material. Four materials, mainly aluminium alloys 6061, A356 T6, 7075, 5052, have been considered for the study of fin characteristics. However, aluminium alloy A356 T6 was found to be the best material for the fins as it has maximum heat dissipation rate.
