Experimental and CFD analysis on cutting tool temperature with different cooling techniques
Abstract
In machining of metals, the cutting tool life and quality of the finished product is influenced by operating temperatures. The high interface temperature of tool and work piece is due to its poor thermal conductivity and high chemical reactivity towards most metals, resulting crater wear and degrades the tool rapidly. The tool life and product quality can be improved by the control of tool tip temperature and the use of effective cooling techniques. In this study, a comparative experimental and analytical investigation is carried out on tool temperature distribution for different cooling techniques like flood cooling, MQL-minimum quantity lubrication and vortex cooling. Experimental results revealed that 6 to 10.8% tooltip temperate dropped for MQL and 27.3 to 32.4% for vortex cooling compared to flood cooling. The CFD model analysis using ANSYS Fluent provided the influence of cooling media and vortex cooling on the cutting tool temperature. The CFD results show 90.8% accuracy with experimental results.
