Simulation based quantitative performance evaluation of unified power quality conditioner under sag, swell and harmonics
Abstract
Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) is custom power device aimed at maintaining high-quality power at the distribution level. It integrates the functions of both series and shunt components to achieve this objective. The series component of the UPQC introduces voltage, while the shunt component injects current into the system. These operations are carried out irrespective of any imbalances or distortions on either the source or load side. The switching schemes for the UPQC's series and shunt active filters enable simultaneous compensation in a power distribution system. The UPQC's effectiveness is demonstrated through performance analysis using MATLAB simulations, particularly under conditions of voltage sag, swell, and supply voltage harmonics. When these variations occur in the supply voltage, analyzing the total harmonic distortion (THD) before and after connecting a Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) highlights the importance of the UPQC. This analysis demonstrates how the UPQC mitigates the impact of voltage variations on THD levels, illustrating its significance in maintaining power quality.
