Mechanisms of Vitamin Action in the Nervous System
Abstract
Vitamins are vital micronutrients that play an important role in safeguarding and maintaining the nervous system through neurotrophic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant actions. Neurodegenerative disorders often stem from oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and hindered neuronal repair, conditions to which the brain is particularly susceptible due to its high metabolic needs and lipid-dense structure. As antioxidants, vitamins counteract reactive oxygen species and mitigate oxidative harm. Vitamin E protects neuronal membranes by preventing the peroxidation of lipids, whereas vitamin C eliminates free radicals and helps regenerate vitamin E. Vitamins also influence inflammatory pathways. Vitamin C diminishes the production of pro-inflammatory substances, vitamin E blocks NF-κB activation, and vitamin D helps regulate cytokine levels and microglial activity. B vitamins reduce homocysteine concentrations, thus lessening vascular and neural damage linked to inflammation. All of these effects work together to mitigate neuroinflammation, a key factor in neurodegenerative and demyelinating diseases. Moreover, vitamins have neurotrophic properties crucial for neuronal development and healing. Vitamin D boosts the expression of neurotrophic factors like brain-derived neurotrophic factor and nerve growth factor, vitamin A derivatives aid in neuronal differentiation and synaptic plasticity, and vitamin B12 paired with folate preserves myelin integrity and facilitates axonal repair. In summary, vitamins function as multipronged modulators of neural well-being, promoting neuroprotection, slowing cognitive decline, and presenting therapeutic promise in neurological conditions. Maintaining sufficient vitamin levels is essential for brain health and preventing neurodegeneration.
