Abstract

This chapter presents a situational assessment of the changing livelihoods and farm economy across the Himalayan regions of India, influenced by intertwined ecological, economic, and social drivers. Drawing on years of field observations, farmer interactions, and consultations with development practitioners, the chapter captures the ongoing transformation in mountain agriculture. A complex and often paradoxical shift is underway—while farmers increasingly pursue high-value commercial crops and agribusiness, traditional foods and indigenous practices are being rapidly abandoned. Migration from rural to urban areas is accelerating, contributing to the erosion of local agrarian culture and rising lifestyle-related health issues. At the same time, a new generation of educated farmers is emerging, redefining agriculture as a business rather than a way of life. This generational shift reflects a broader convergence of mountain communities with national economic trends. However, the pace and nature of this change vary widely across regions. The chapter underscores the need for a fundamental reorientation in mountain agriculture development that integrates both traditional wisdom and modern approaches. Without such adaptation, the sustainability of Himalayan farming systems remains uncertain.
